A prominent practitioner in the field of Solution Focus Therapy, Lee Shilts has worked closely with Steve deShazer and Insoo Kim Berg, the founders and leaders in this therapeutic specialty. Currently, he is engaged in a solution focused brief therapy training project with Drs. DeShazer and Berg that includes trainers across North America.

Dr. Shilts began his career in the helping professions as a counselor in special education programs based in both residential and school environments. His experience has included clients in programs focused on early childhood, learning disabilities, emotionally disturbed, educable mentally retarded, trainable mentally retarded, multiple handicapped, and school-aged mothers. He received his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech in 1988, and has taught in the SHSS family therapy program since 1990. Dr. Shilts has been licensed for practice in Florida for fourteen years and has been a AAMFT-approved supervisor since 1990.

His teaching interests include clinical practice, solution focused theory and therapy, teaching and supervision in systemic therapies, the use of solution focused therapy in non-traditional settings, Ericksonian hypnotherapy, the use of letter writing in therapeutic settings, and language systems. Dr. Shilts has also published often with students, primarily on applications of solution focused therapy and aspects of therapist supervision.
