Scholarships/Fellowships Search Program (SFSP)

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will assist dedicated learners who are attempting to secure regional, national, and international scholarships and fellowships in their respective fields of study at NSU. We would like to help facilitate these scholarship searches and applications. The School does offer a number of scholarships in the Departments of Family Therapy, Dispute Resolution, and Peace Studies, but we do encourage you to seek external scholarships as well.As you may know, most of the scholarships provide financial support and assistance for graduate studies, pre-thesis/pre-dissertation work including practicum and internship, thesis/dissertation research, and post-graduate projects. These scholarships are often based on the academic merits and/or needs of the individual applicant and are different from the federal financial aid loans and programs. It will be helpful for you to consider taking the following steps:

1) Recognize yourself as a special graduate learner in your respective field and don't feel intimidated by scholarship protocol--it is a worthwhile, empowering process that will serve you well, considering potential rewards and honors.

2) Talk with your faculty advisor and/or program director about your area(s) of interest.

3) Keep in mind that family therapy, conflict resolution, and peace research are multidisciplinary (i.e. not only the traditional disciplines in the social sciences and humanities such as sociology, psychology, history, political science, education; but also the interdisciplinary studies such as African American studies, int'l relations, urban studies, regional planning...).

4) Compile a broadly-defined list of key words descriptive of your academic/professional interest, affiliated discipline(s), and intended concentration (e.g. ethnic groups and conflicts; brief, solution-focused, family-centered treatment; community justice and development; Latin American studies...).

5) Compare notes with your peers (on other funding resources, study angles, website search tips, and so forth) and see if there is a team approach you can incorperate with them.

6) Do a computerized search on the internet (e.g. fastweb.com) and look at the list of potential funding agencies generated by the computer program--nowadays most of the foundations have maintained a website where you can obtain information on funding priorities, considerations, requirements, procedures, and timelines.

7) Identify those funding agencies that look close to what you want to accomplish and go to their home pages (or contact them by other means) for more information.

8) Prepare your applications based on the requirements of those funding agencies and send out your information to as many of the foundations as possible.

The following websites are some examples and are linked here for your convenience of starting the search. Be creative, persistent, and open-minded!
